Moving? What to Check on Washers/Dryers Before Reconnecting
A washer and dryer that worked fine at the old place can cause leaks, drainage problems, or worse if they're reconnected carelessly at the new one. Here's what actually matters when hooking them back up.

Four things to get right
Water supply lines (washer)
Connect the hot and cold supply hoses to the matching valves and hand-tighten, then snug with a wrench without overtightening, which can crack fittings. Once the water is back on, check every connection for drips under full line pressure before walking away, and use fresh washers or tape on the fittings if the old ones look worn.
Drain hose height
The drain hose needs to sit at the correct standpipe height, generally in the range set by the machine's manual, not just shoved into whatever drain is closest. A hose that's too low can let water siphon out mid-cycle instead of only draining when it should, which shows up as a washer that never seems to fill properly.
Dryer vent connection
Reattach the vent duct securely with a clamp, not just tape, and make sure it wasn't crushed or kinked during the move. A dryer that vents into a wall cavity or a crushed duct instead of outside is both a performance problem and a fire-safety one — see our dryer vent cleaning guide for more on that risk.
Gas line: professional only
If the dryer is gas, don't reconnect the gas line yourself. Most manufacturers require a new, code-compliant flexible gas connector any time one is disconnected rather than reusing the old one, and a licensed professional should make the connection and pressure-test it for leaks. This is the one step on this list worth paying for.
Before the first load
Run a test cycle before trusting it
Once everything is connected, run a short test cycle on both machines before doing a full load. Watch the washer's connections for the first few minutes for any dripping, and check that the dryer vent flap outside is moving air. It's much easier to catch and fix a loose fitting or a kinked vent in the first ten minutes than after a full load has already run.

Can I reconnect a gas dryer myself after a move?
It is not recommended. Appliance manufacturers generally require a new, code-compliant flexible gas connector any time one is removed rather than reusing the old one, and a licensed professional should make the connection and test it for leaks. The cost of a professional connection is small compared to the risk of a gas leak.
Why is drain hose height important when reconnecting a washer?
If the drain hose or standpipe is too low, water can siphon out of the tub during the wash cycle instead of draining only when it's supposed to. Getting the standpipe height right prevents slow draining, siphoning, and water on the floor.
