Musty Washer Smell: Gasket Mold and How It's Fixed
A musty smell coming from the washer, especially a front-load model, is one of the most common complaints out there, and it's almost always the rubber door gasket. Here's why it happens, how to clean it properly, and what keeps it from coming back.
Request ServiceWhy front-load washers are more prone to this
Front-load washers rely on a rubber gasket to form a watertight seal around the door. That same tight seal is what traps detergent residue and moisture against the drum, which is exactly the environment mold and mildew need to take hold. Fabric softener buildup makes it worse, since residue collects in the folds of the gasket where water pools after a cycle ends.
Where to check
- The folds of the rubber door gasket, especially the lower portion
- The detergent and fabric softener dispenser drawer
- The drain pump filter
- Standing water left in the bottom of the drum after a cycle
Cleaning it properly
Three areas that need attention
The gasket
Gently pull back the folds of the rubber gasket and wipe out any trapped water, then clean with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar, or a mild bleach mixture for more stubborn mold. This is the single most important step, since it's where most of the smell originates.
The dispenser drawer
Remove the drawer if possible and rinse away built-up detergent and softener residue. A drawer that's never been removed for cleaning is often surprisingly dirty.
A sanitize or cleaning cycle
Running an empty hot-water cycle with a washing machine cleaner or a diluted bleach solution reaches the parts of the drum and drain path that hand cleaning can't.
Habits that prevent it
Leaving the washer door open between loads, wiping the gasket dry after use, and using the correct amount of HE detergent all reduce how often mold gets a chance to establish itself. A monthly cleaning cycle, on top of a quick gasket wipe every couple of weeks, keeps most washers smell-free without much extra effort.

Questions
Musty smell questions
Why does my front-load washer smell worse than a top-load washer?
The rubber door gasket on front-load washers creates a tight seal that traps detergent residue and moisture, which is exactly the environment mold needs. Top-load washers don't have that same gasket, so they're less prone to this specific smell.
Is it normal for a musty smell to come back after cleaning?
A mild smell returning after a few weeks usually just means the gasket needs another wipe-down. A strong smell that returns quickly after a full cleaning, especially with visible mold elsewhere in the machine, is worth having looked at.
