What each noise usually means
Squealing or squeaking
A high-pitched squeal, especially at startup or during the first few minutes of a cycle, usually comes from a worn idler pulley bearing or a drive belt that has started to slip or crack. This is typically a wear-and-tear issue rather than a sign of a bigger failure.
Grinding or scraping
A grinding or metal-on-metal scraping sound points to worn drum support rollers, glides, or a worn rear drum bearing. Once these parts wear through their original coating, the drum rubs directly against metal each time it turns, and the sound tends to get worse the longer it's left.
Thumping or banging
Rhythmic thumping usually means a flat-spotted or worn drum roller no longer rolling smoothly, or a load that's bulky and unevenly distributed inside the drum. If thumping happens on every load, the roller is more likely; if it's occasional and load-dependent, balance is more likely.
